Hi! I’m Gretchen,
A Texan, mental health advocate & sober blogger
I'm passionate about Texas, Health and Sobriety. I'm finding a way to connect them since I am a former educator, who still subs, and is an alcoholic. The two went hand in hand.
Entering the second chapter of my life, or maybe the third; I left teaching in Oct. after over 20 years. There has definitely been some time and healing that has taken place since my departure from education. Three months later, I am just now finding my footing and overcoming PTSD from the job. I am convinced that a classroom teacher does the job of at least 5 people.
I was also a single mom which added to the stress. I was in survival mode for many years. Juggling the financial hardships of teaching and parenting as an alcoholic is not an easy road. I give myself props to some extent. My kids, now 20 and 22, would probably disagree.
Taking time to care for yourself and monitor your own mental state is a large part of being healthy and successfully sober. If you need to leave a job. Leave it. If you need to separate from someone. Separate. If you need a hamburger. Eat it.
Life is hard. I hope you've found a place where you can feel understood, inspired and maybe even entertained. Welcome.
